Jeff’s answer to the latest Ask the Expert question is below.

Question:

Do I really need to change my oil every 3,000 miles?

Answer:

This is a great question!  Automotive manufacturers all have different ways that they answer this question.  The biggest factor relating to how frequently you should change your engine oil is the overall driving conditions that your vehicle is operated in.  Manufacturers usually state recommendations based on "normal" driving conditions.  If you live in Minnesota you know that we live in a climate that has large temperature and moisture swings and does not fall into a "normal" category.  We experience extreme heat and extreme cold all within a few months time and these climate changes affect the life of your engine oil.  Other important factors to consider are multiple short trips, excessive stop and go driving, towing with your vehicle, operating a vehicle that is always loaded down and/or driving on dirt roads, these items all need to be considered when determining how frequently you should change your engine oil.  On the flip side, if you do most of your driving on the highway with little stop and go driving, then you would be a great candidate who might consider stretching your oil change intervals out.  We do recommend for the majority of our customers that you change your oil regularly every 3,000 miles.  Beyond your engine oil needs we find that this interval (about 4 services per year) also allows for us to be sure your tires are properly inflated, your exterior lighting is all functional, your fluids are all topped off and your vehicle remains safe and in great working order!
